Cognitive Behavioural Therapy is a form of psychotherapy that addresses psychological issues by focusing on the way that a person’s thoughts and beliefs influence their emotions and behavioural responses to situations. A CBT approach includes psychoeducation so that people can become more self-aware and recognize the reasons the think and behave in the ways they do. Other elements of CBT include problem solving, finding solutions, improving coping, challenging cognitive distortions (thoughts and beliefs that may not reflect reality) and changing behaviours that were once adaptive. Change may also be achieved through exposure to specific situations, cues, narratives or places that trigger distress and habitual maladaptive responses. See below for more information on CBT from our "Resources" page.
